#89. The Breath of the Mountains: Bringing the Calm of the Wild Into Everyday Life

Sometimes, the pace of daily life catches up with us, and our nervous system quietly signals that it is time to pause. In those moments, we often forget the simplest and most grounding tool we have: our breath.

In 2019, I travelled to one of the most remote corners of Mongolia. It was a journey that reshaped my understanding of what it means to truly slow down, reconnect with the present moment, and find space to breathe.

Tuning into the rhythm of the taiga

During that journey, I spent hours on horseback deep in the Mongolian taiga, travelling to meet the reindeer herders. Having never ridden a horse before, the experience was entirely new to me. Yet, as the hours passed in that vast and quiet landscape, something beautiful began to shift.

The silence slowly drew my attention away from my thoughts and back into my body. I became aware of the horse's breathing beneath me. Its rhythm was slow, calm, and completely unconcerned with time. Without even realizing it, my own breathing began to follow that steady, natural pace.

There was something deeply grounding about moving through a landscape where nothing felt rushed. I remember the sound of the wind moving through the trees, the cold air touching my face, and the feeling of being surrounded by a silence that felt almost alive. In those moments, I was reminded that nature has its own rhythm, and that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply listen.

Why natural landscapes restore our focus

Later in the journey, while staying with the eagle hunters, I captured this photograph of the snow covered mountains early in the morning. Looking at this image always brings back the physical memory of that moment: the crisp mountain air, the stillness before the day began, the soft light on the peaks, and the feeling of standing in a landscape untouched by urgency.

In environmental psychology, this restorative effect is known as soft fascination. Our daily lives demand constant, highly focused attention through screens, schedules, responsibilities, and endless decisions. Nature, however, asks for nothing. It gently holds our attention without demanding cognitive effort.

Whether your eyes follow the quiet lines of mountain ridges or the slow movement of clouds across the sky, your mind is given a chance to rest. These moments of gentle attention can help reduce mental fatigue and create a greater sense of calm and balance.

Nature art as a daily visual anchor

Most of us live with busy schedules in environments that are not always designed with quietness in mind. While we cannot always escape to the wilderness, what we choose to surround ourselves with every day still matters. Our nervous system is constantly responding to the spaces we inhabit and the visual cues they provide.

This is the foundation of Applied Nature Art. A photograph can never replace the experience of standing in the wild, feeling the wind, breathing the mountain air, or hearing the silence of a remote landscape. But it can serve as a powerful visual anchor.

A carefully chosen image can offer a momentary pause for your eyes, inviting a slower breath and bringing a sense of the mountain’s timeless rhythm into your everyday space.

A small reminder that, even in the middle of a busy life, there is still a place within us that remembers how to breathe.

Nanda Bussers is a visual artist and creator of the EARTH method for intuitive and healing nature photography. Her work explores the quiet connection between nature, presence and inner stillness. Each image is an invitation to pause for a moment, to breathe more slowly, and to reconnect with the natural world, yourself and the moments that often pass unnoticed.

Bringing the presence of nature into your space

My photographs are available as art prints through ArtHeroes and Werk aan de Muur in Europe, and as fine art prints via Fine Art America worldwide. Each piece is created to carry a sense of stillness and connection, whether it offers comfort, reflection or simply a quiet moment within a space.

In addition, I offer a selection of low-resolution images for more personal uses such as memorial or prayer cards. If you feel drawn to a specific image or would like guidance in choosing something that fits your space or intention, you are always welcome to get in touch.
