Moving to a new country is more than just a change of scenery. It’s an emotional journey. As I build my life in Norway, I find myself drawn even more to the healing power of nature. Through long hikes or quiet moments behind the camera, I see how deeply my photography is connected to this transition. Just like nature’s cycles, moving abroad comes with growth, reflection, and letting go.
Celebrating Friluftsliv
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned here is the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv; a philosophy celebrating outdoor living. The name itself means free, air, and life, perfectly describing how I experience nature in Norway: as a source of freedom, clarity, and renewal. Through my photography, I capture these moments of peace and share them with others, especially those who find comfort in nature during times of change.
A Weekend of Wilderness and Connection
Recently, I fully embraced friluftsliv during a photography retreat deep in the Norwegian mountains. My friend and fellow photographer Bjørn-Egil Brekke invited me to his cozy cabin for a weekend of nature and creativity. With no running water or electricity, and only the sound of the wind, we truly returned to the basics.
We spent our days trekking across frozen lakes and through snow-covered forests, following the historic Kongevegen (King’s Road)—once the main route connecting eastern and western Norway. Surrounded by crisp air and untouched landscapes, it felt like stepping back in time. We also visited a centuries-old stave church, its dark wooden structure a testament to Norway’s deep connection to nature and craftsmanship.
The Magic of a Starry Night
One unforgettable moment came at night. With no artificial lights around, I stepped outside the cabin to a sky bursting with stars. The stars stretched across the heavens, and in the freezing air, I felt completely present. Photography is often about capturing light, but sometimes, it’s about simply witnessing it.
Friluftsliv: The Norwegian Philosophy of Outdoor Living
Beyond photography, this weekend was also a lesson in Norwegian culture. I discovered how deeply ingrained friluftsliv is in the Norwegian way of life. More than just spending time outdoors, it’s about fully embracing nature in all its forms, no matter the season. It was the perfect embodiment of friluftsliv. We stepped away from modern comforts, lived in sync with nature, and found peace in the wilderness. No distractions, no rush, just the crisp mountain air, breathtaking scenery, and a deep sense of belonging.
Looking Forward to More Norwegian Adventures
As I reflect on this incredible experience, I feel so grateful to live in a country where nature is so accessible and celebrated. These moments reminded me why Norway is such a special place. I’m already looking forward to my next adventure in these magical mountains. A huge thank you to everyone who made this weekend so special.
