What is Healing Art?
Healing Art is much more than something beautiful to look at; it has the power to heal, comfort, and restore peace, especially during challenging times. But what makes it so powerful? How does it help our emotional well-being and recovery? In this blog, I will explore the essence of Healing Art and its potential to transform our emotions and lives.

The Power of Art in Difficult Times
Art has a profound ability to comfort and heal, especially in moments of illness, loss, or grief. A painting, a photograph, or a piece of music can reach us on a deep emotional level, providing comfort when words fall short. Colors, shapes, and compositions influence our feelings; warm tones evoke a sense of security, while soft, natural hues promote relaxation.
Through my own photography, I consciously choose organic forms, tranquil landscapes, and harmonious color palettes to create a sense of calm and reassurance. My work is displayed in waiting rooms, hospitals, crematoria, and memorial spaces, to provide comfort and peace. I firmly believe that nature images in particular, have a profound healing effect on the mind and soul.
The Science Behind Healing Art
Healing art is not just an intuitive concept; scientific research supports its positive effects. Dr. Roger Ulrich, a pioneer in this field, discovered that art – especially nature images – can reduce stress and accelerate recovery. Studies have shown that patients with a view of a natural environment required less pain medication and recovered more quickly than those who faced a blank wall.
Nature images have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels, and improve mood. Our brains are wired to respond positively to natural environments, triggering a relaxation response. Visual stimuli in nature, like green spaces or water scenes, engage our senses and help restore mental clarity and emotional balance.
Other studies highlight how art in hospitals has a calming effect on both patients and healthcare providers. Art is not merely used to make sterile environments more inviting; it actively fosters comfort and emotional well-being. This is why healing art is increasingly found in hospitals, waiting areas, treatment centers, and even MRI rooms, where it helps alleviate anxiety during medical procedures.
Healing Art in Practice
Healing art encompasses many forms, including dance, music, writing, visual arts, and photography. My focus lies in the power of visual art, particularly nature photography. My images are meant to support people in challenging times, bring calm to hectic environments, and foster a sense of connection.
Nature and landscapes, in particular, have a therapeutic effect. A serene ocean, a vast heathland, or a forest where light gently filters through the leaves - such images evoke a sense of space and breath, which is invaluable in times of stress or sorrow.
My Mission with Healing Art
My goal is to positively impact through my work, offering healing, peace, and solace. For some, that means a brief distraction in a hospital room; for others, it’s a way to remember and feel connected to a loved one.
Nanda Bussers is a visual artist and creator of the EARTH method for intuitive and healing nature photography. Her work explores the quiet connection between nature, presence and inner stillness. Each image is an invitation to pause for a moment, to breathe more slowly, and to reconnect with the natural world, yourself and the moments that often pass unnoticed.
Bringing the presence of nature into your space
My photographs are available as art prints through ArtHeroes and Werk aan de Muur in Europe, and as fine art prints via Fine Art America worldwide. Each piece is created to carry a sense of stillness and connection, whether it offers comfort, reflection or simply a quiet moment within a space.
In addition, I offer a selection of low-resolution images for more personal uses such as memorial or prayer cards. If you feel drawn to a specific image or would like guidance in choosing something that fits your space or intention, you are always welcome to get in touch.
